Haderslev Municipality’s Cultural Heritage

The Heritage Agency of Denmark and Realdania have selected Haderslev as one out of four cultural heritage municipalities.

Five cultural heritage environments have been chosen in Haderslev.

Årsøund/Årø

Aarøsund is a small port at Little Belt. The town is named after the sound between the mainland and Aarø, which is the island that lies just across it. In the old days there was a ferry service to Assens. Aarøsund was the end station of the small railway from Haderslev from 1903-1938, and the old station is now used by a boat builder.
Located by the harbour you will find Aarøsund Beach Hotel, that was renovated in 2003.

Tørning - Christiansdal

The two hydroelectric plants Tørning Mill and Christiansdal are connected via a canal that runs along the Tunneldalen (the Tunnel Valley – a subglacial stream trench). The plants and the landscape around them are expressions to industrial history in beautiful surroundings. By Tørning Mill you will find Tørning Voldsted, which is a marked hill formation.

Gram Palace Town/Railway town

Gram is comprised of two railway towns that have grown together. To the north is the palace town with the palace, the palace inn, the park and the many railway town houses along Åvej. The southern station no longer exists, but the track from the north is preserved as a path that runs like a curve to the west through Gram. Slotsvej runs between the palace and the southern station. Slotsgade is a beautiful road with a number of houses that are well worth preserving.

Gram Palace Town/railway town has also been selected as our local cultural heritage.

Haderslev’s Old Town

The town Haderslev was built on a sandbank in Haderslev Fjord around the year 1200. The Y-shaped main road from the south, that divides itself into Apotekergade/Bispegade and Nørregade, is the earliest traffic structure in Haderslev. The oldest parts of town with the cathedral and the square as the highest points were thus an island in the fjord. 400 years of building styles are preserved in Haderslev.

The Landscape

The landscape surrounding Haderslev Municipality consists of the Tunneldalen and Gram Bakkeø (Gram Hill Island). Both are Ice Age formations, and the Tunneldalen is the youngest. Today the Tunneldalen is filled with water and runs through Haderslev Fjord, Haderslev Pond, Hindemade and Stevning Pond. The stretch offers a lot of nature experiences, and at several points the water has been raised to establish a sufficiently high gradient to the benefit of mills. The landscape changes at the town Vojens into a plain with “hill islands”. Gram Hill Island stretches from Skrydstrup to the point where Gram Å (stream) and Gels Å meet, and the highest point is at Nustrup. The main road from Aarøsund to Ribe runs along the whole stretch.

The cultural Heritage

Haderslev Municipality intends to use the local cultural heritage to attract new citizens and strengthen tourism. The municipality has invited and appointed a Cultural Heritage Network of interested citizens who can contribute with ideas and viewpoints.
